Tips For Choosing The Right Web Developer
Posted: 30 May 2011 06:38 AM PDT
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/WebBlogNews/~3/xC3mJdBSmU4/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email
By their very nature web developers and programmers tend to be quite
youthful. They enter the business often at a very young age with out ever
having worked in a company or organisation. This means they have never had
to answer to any one or abide by rules or corporate regulations and
protocols. What this means for any business who engages these kinds of kids
to develop their web site is that they could run in to serious issues. Some
of these issues are quite problematic and could mean a horrific end to a
web design project. Some issues that may arise are:1) The web developer
takes on your project but is totally oblivious to your time frame and worse
than that he is reluctant to work with you to adhere to this tight
schedule.2) They never answer any phone calls or messages once they have
the job. Often they are over loaded with work and you can often be placed
at the bottom of the pile or queue meaning that your job will not meet its
deadline. This can be of little concern to the developer as he is not the
one dealing with a stressed out frantic client on the phone chewing your
ear off daily. These are just a few things that can arise when dealing with
some one who has very little work experience and who has an ego and
attitude. The best possible thing that you can do to find a good developer
is to look at these points and use them as a guide:1) Make certain that
they have a portfolio of work online that you can see and above all check
with them to see if they have any clients that you are able to call up and
verify their work standards and project delivery. Call a few of these
people up and cross check every thing. Do not just call one person, make
certain that you do call at least two or three people. If they all say the
same thing then you do have a winner.2) Probably best not to choose a kid
with little or no experience who is offering to do the job for next to
nothing. remember, you pay for what you get and at the end of the day you
will get an inferior job. These are just a few points but you should really
use your best judgment and talk to as many developers as you can prior to
committing you business or company to this person.

Digital Marketing - Why Are Mobile Websites Necessary?
Posted: 30 May 2011 05:41 AM PDT
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/WebBlogNews/~3/cMkOSRHBgxc/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email
A mobile website is a website specifically developed for mobile or cell
phone browsers. Having a normal website does not automatically mean you
have a mobile website because there are so many differences between the two
platforms. So, nows a very good time to explain why mobile websites are
necessary for businesses.Over the next three years, mobile phone users will
surpass desktop computers. As a veteran of the cell phone industry, Ive
seen this shift happen as mobile phones have become like personal mini
computers and the trend is only getting bigger. In fact, the smartphone
market will grow 253% by the year 2015. Then with the introduction of the
iPad and other tablet devices, mobile browsing went into a whole different
stratosphere of possibilities. What will become possible with these tablet
devices hasnt even been realized yet.Mobile websites are necessary because
normal websites are not optimized for mobile browsers. Normal websites are
designed to be viewed on full-sized screens, which could be a 11-inch
screen or higher. You might be lucky to get a 4-inch screen on your mobile
device, so the viewing experience on a mobile device is drastically
different. One great example showcasing the differences of a mobile website
versus a regular website is with Apple devices. Its no secret that anything
in flash format will NOT be viewable on an Apple mobile device, like an
iPhone or an iPad.Since mobile devices have smaller screens, the user
actions provide different ways that users interact with websites on their
phones. You dont have the luxury of a mouse on your phone, therefore the
method of navigating on the mobile site is completely different than a
traditional site. You dont touch your computer screen to make choices (for
most of the computers out there), but you use your touch screen all the
time on your phone or tablet. Therefore, how people interact and use the
site is completely different from one platform to the next.More and more
consumers are on the go which means your business needs to be there.
Whether people are out and about meeting clients or maybe theyre at the
ballpark watching their kids game, their business must be with them at all
times. Over half of all Internet connections today originate from a mobile
device. Thats right over half! Its no longer a luxury to have access to
your business from a mobile device. Its not expected and the smart
businesses who understand this and implement this will be the businesses
who prosper in the next 5 years.By the way, do you want to learn more about

Is Amazon AppStore A Good Alternate For Downloading Android Apps
Posted: 30 May 2011 03:07 AM PDT
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/WebBlogNews/~3/P0ITBjS3Xis/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email
The number of Android applications hosted by Amazon AppStore now goes
beyond 4000. There is an Android phone simulator to test the functionality
of the Android application that you want to buy. The Android application
can be downloaded through the web browser of the computer or through the
Amazon AppStore. Some of the prominent reasons for the Amazon plunging into
the sale of Android Applications are as follows.Mouth watering
incentivesThe Amazon AppStore is organized so systematically and
methodically that whoever visits it for the first time feels comfortable at
navigating and buying the Android Applications. The incentives offered by
the Amazon AppStore are very attractive. A paid application is being
offered free for a day by the Amazon AppStore. A prospective buyer of the
application are offered a trial period of 30 minutes on certain
applications. These applications can be run for only 30 minutes on the
virtual phone browser. This helps the buyer to decide whether the
application is going to be of any use to him/her and saves him/her from
spending on applications that are of no use to him/her.VirusesIt is known
that the Android Market of Google is resistant to viruses. This impression
was shattered when the code of 21 famous free android applications were
found to be infected with a virus. After incorporating the virus those
applications were republished to be sold in the market. The hacked versions
or the infected versions of the applications had a code that used to steal
the data of the user. This viral code was also able to download excess code
after installation of the hacked application. The devices were being
hijacked through this hacked application. The Google was quick at response
and launched an antidote kill switch to get rid of the hacked application
form the Android phones affected by the virus. Google has now come out with
a security tool for the Android phone users to get rid of infected
applications.Centralized DistributionThe official market of Android is the
single central location for buying and downloading the Android
Applications. The Android community puts in meticulous efforts to regulate,
and moderate the applications so that they are free of viruses. When the
user tries to find and download applications from unauthorized sources, the
chances of downloading infected applications increase drastically. This
implies that the applications should be downloaded from legitimate and
reliable sources. The Amazon AppStore by offering Android applications for
sale is one way contributing to the popularity of the Android phones and on
the other hand offering an alternate source to buy and download the Android
Applications. Finally it depends on the Android phone user whether to source
the application from Android Market or Amazon AppStore.Copyright ? 2011

How to Use WordPress As CMS?
Posted: 30 May 2011 12:51 AM PDT
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/WebBlogNews/~3/evIRaGVW1DM/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email
WordPress can be used as a platform for blogging and can also be used as a
Content Management System totally depending on the requirements of the
clients and functionalities needed to fulfill those requirements.Using
WordPress as a CMS simply means you are going to design a theme which means
basically you are going to use pages for your static content same as it is
done on blog. The major difference here is, the pages here are the core
content on your website and not the posts. The WordPress administrative area
is the area which turns it in to a Content Management System. The admin
area of WordPress provides a WYSIWYG editor which is similar to
mini-version of Microsoft Word. This editor allows you or anyone to
virtually add and edit the content themselves. This is possible by their
web browser even if there is no knowledge of HTML.The steps to use
WordPress as a CMS to create a website are:-1. First create a page named as
homepage and give it page order 0.2. Add /* Template Name: Weblog */
between the PHP tags on the top of index.php3. Create an empty page named
Weblog and give it page order 99. Assign weblog template to this page.4.
Select homepage as front page and Weblog as post page from the admin
section.Pages are used for the content of the CMS but the only thing about
which proper care should be taken is that the page order should be between
0 and 99. By this always the first page to be appeared on menu will be
homepage and Weblog will be the last page. There are many benefits of using
WordPress as a CMS. WordPress is very cheap and so helps you save money if
you use it for your website. It is very easy to use at the same time so it
can be used by anyone even if he/she doesnt have sound knowledge of
programming. WordPress even makes easy to optimize your search engine
results that is it will increase the chances to get your website on the
first page of search results. It can be accessed by multiple users so if
there are any problems than it can be fixed by anyone as it can be accessed
from anywhere. This saves your time and money as you dont have to wait and
pay programmer for small errors. So using WordPress as a CMS is not
difficult as it has been framed. Moreover, it is easier to write, edit,
organize and publish articles and manage web content in WordPress because
of which it has become more popular and effective. WordPress is the best
choice for a flexible, low-cost and dynamic Content Management System for
any website.

The Pros and Cons of Free Websites
Posted: 29 May 2011 11:31 PM PDT
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/WebBlogNews/~3/tU3XeJSd4Rg/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email
There are several advantages to using free websites; however, there are
also a few drawbacks that you should think about. Although they can be a
very cost effective alternative, you dont have quite as many options when
it comes to site advertising and customization. Furthermore these companies
may or may not offer the option of having a personalized domain name, and
the websites do not typically respond well to common SEO strategies. These
types of sites are obviously a much cheaper option than the paid versions.
Many of them have very professional templates to choose from, as well as,
user friendly tools that can help you build your site quickly and
efficiently. These features can give someone with absolutely no experience
the opportunity to create a professional looking website in as little as a
day or two.One caveat to having this type of website; however, is the fact
that you dont have as much freedom when it comes to advertising. In fact,
there will most likely be irrelevant pop up and banner advertisements on
your site, which is ultimately the reason companies can offer them for
free. This may be a big factor for some businesses, while others may not
mind at all.Although these companies typically offer numerous options for
customizing your website, you may be limited on the amount of space and
pages you can have. Furthermore, there are also some limitations to what
you can do with your content. In some cases; however, these sites can offer
everything a business needs to create an impressive online
presence.Oftentimes, these sites do not offer personalized domain names and
email addresses. There is generally a sub-domain in the URL, which may not
be considered as professional. Some companies do offer the option to
upgrade to a paying site, or purchase domain names and pay for hosting.
Either way, this immediately negates the main benefit of these sites, which
is that they are a cost effective option. In many cases, these sites are
also not picked up by search engines. This means that common SEO
strategies, which are often used to improve visibility and increase
conversion rates, are often ineffective. Additionally, it is less likely
that your website will be recognized by other web masters that may
participate in link exchange programs. If you do feel that this is the best
solution for your business, it is best to search Google for free custom
websites. Finding companies with higher SERP rankings at least indicates
the use of effective marketing strategies. This may give your site a better
chance of getting noticed.Free websites can be a very cost effective
solution for individuals and small businesses that want to create an online
presence. Furthermore, people that have little to no experience can often
have a website up and running very quickly. It may be a good idea to search
Google for possible free custom websites, if your business or organization
is in need of a new website or website overhaul.

Pay Monthly Rental Websites: A Cheap Option, But Is It a Real Alternative
Option for Businesses?
Posted: 29 May 2011 08:25 PM PDT
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/WebBlogNews/~3/IxyQ_E12Sec/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email
Recently we have seen growing trend for pay monthly websites. These types
of websites give a business the opportunity to get a website at a fraction
of the upfront cost of the normal development route. The question is are
they a genuine alternative to what is deemed the normal pay for in full
website or just a cheap poor quality option that should be avoided at all
cost. In the current climate, with the credit crunch, and businesses going
out of business at an alarming rate, a new breed of website has risen up to
help the struggling business generate more sales. The pay monthly website,
or rental website is gaining popularity, and with businesses making
redundancies and a marked increase in new start-up businesses, the Pay
monthly website seems like the perfect solution to cash strapped businesses
both new young and old. In the modern internet Google driven world we live
in, it is essential to have some kind of online presence for business, but
the cost of getting a website developed can prove prohibitive, especially
for a business that is feeling the pinch in these hard times.A concern for
any business when it comes to marketing and promotion, should be does it
represent my brand well. Can a website developed on a shoestring, come out
with a product that represents the brand and is good enough for worldwide
presentation. Here we have to consider individual the needs of the company
and the complexity of the website. So who is a Pay monthly rental website
suitable for and how can you differentiate between good and a bad.Pay
monthly WebsiteThe pay monthly website will have the following features and
restrictions. This is not an exhaustive list. The Website will be template
driven. The quality of the template will vary from developer to developer.
The template system will restrict your options regarding design, you will
be able to pick a colour pallet, and an overall feel I.E. corporate or
funky, brightly coloured or muted, but you would be restricted on
individual design elements. Most of this type of website is systemised and
built using a Content management system such as WordPress, Jommla or Modx.
These systems vary considerably and you will hear different opinions on
each, but they all produce basically the same results. The issue to
consider here is this type of website is Database driven, they can be quite
restrictive and would prove difficult to move to another hosting
company.Restrictions exist at the lower level to the number of pages you
will have available for the website, if you only need four pages then
great, but how restrictive will it be if you need to add more pages what
are the implications and cost. The development cost and time will be
significantly reduced, and the functionality of the website will be good as
it will be developed using proven tested methods. The content management
system for the sight should become available to the business, which means
once the sight is live it can be edited with a bit of training by the
company. This will provide great savings going forward when the company
edits its own content. You should be able to request additional add-ons such
as newsletter page, Blog, RRS feeds etc. as the CMS systems are built to
handle this. Again the advantage being these are tried and tested systems
so should prove reliable. If you chose the right development company, you
can end up with a very well developed product, which is comparable in
almost every way to the more expensive bespoke designed website, but at a
fraction of the up-front cost. However do your research, and take a look at
the website portfolio. If the web development company has any existing
clients in their portfolio perhaps ring them and ask them about their
experience working with the company.Bespoke developed websiteThe normal
route to a website is to use a website development company, the price for
development can vary dramatically, from 500 for a basic 3 to 5 page
website, up to 20,000 and above for a high end Dynamic sight with tons of
functionality. The average price for a website in my experience is around
1500 to 4000 for a well-designed website with basic functionality. The
normal payment method for a bespoke developed website is three equal
payments. With the balance due before the site goes live. What you get with
a bespoke developed website.Obviously the first comment to make here is
flexibility. With a bespoke developed website the business gets full
control over the design and page layout. You can make it work more closely
with your existing branding. You will be less restricted on number of pages,
and menu layouts and navigation options within the site. The end product
will be guaranteed unique, and should represent your company perfectly. The
development time will invariably take much longer and will require much
more input from the companyThis type of development can be much more labour
intensive and complex.A new cutting edge development with large amounts of
dynamic work can take months to complete. In conclusion, it all depends on
what the businesss wish list versus budget and time scales. If you are a
start-up company needing a brochure site to promote your products or
services, or an established company needing to upgrade your current
website, but are worried about the cost versus cash flow the Pay monthly
website could prove the perfect option. However if you need much more
functionality from the site, or have very individual design ideas for the
site then bespoke development will be the route to take but ensure you
think hard about your budget and what you can really achieve with it. The
growth of the pay monthly website in the market place is assured, and from
my point of view that can only be a good thing. The need for all companies
to be online with a website is paramount and if this product gives them an
opportunity that would be otherwise shut to them, then that can only be a
good thing. This article has been viewed 7 time(s). Article Submitted On:

Request for Proposals - How To Create a Great RFP for a Software
Development Project
Posted: 29 May 2011 07:52 PM PDT
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/WebBlogNews/~3/cCImyt_aOuY/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email
The best RFPs (Request For Proposals) are the most complete RFPs. Writing a
great comprehensive RFP is a pretty big undertaking and is best approached
by taking it in steps. As a general rule, add as much information as you
can and ask for everything you will need from your potential development
partner, right within the RFP itself. Your ability to do that will have a
great effect on the quality of the scope of work document that you receive
in return. It will also ensure that inappropriate vendors dont spend
countless hours creating a proposal when they are not right for the
job.Even though the reasons may not seem obvious to you now, the RFP should
begin by including the specifics of your brand positioning. As you will
see, it will also include all of your business requirements for
functionality, the vision and objectives for the project, a proposed
schedule, as well as a request for client references and specifics on
methodology.Generally speaking, the RFP will indicate to the agency/vendor
what it will be like to work with your company. A prospective vendor will
evaluate your style of communication and knowledge of the subject by what
you write and ask of them.As with any writing projects, it is always good
to start with an outline. When you have created a draft from the outline,
it is a good idea to circulate it so you have consensus with your team to
avoid time-consuming delays later on. It goes without saying that it should
be a cohesive document that flows well, is thorough and is easy to
comprehend. It should include the following: Company background, brand
positioning and product overviewBusiness goals and objectives (both
short-term and long-term). This will not be a list of what you would like
developed but what the end result of the project will achieve. Each RFP
should not have a list of more than 3 or 4 ultimate goals in order not to
lose track of the focus of the project.Instructions primary point of
contact, due date for proposals, where to send, etc.Requirements -
functionality required of website or solution. Get very detailed in this
section. Highlight all the features and functionality required.Treatment of
Information and Expectations for the proposal what exact elements do you
expect the vendor to deliver to you.Vendor background and
informationTechnical approachDelivery methodology what are the
phases?Request for referencesDeveloping the proposal/selection process and
selection criteria. Include a proposed timeline when responses are due,
when and how questions may be answered, presentations, final decision,
delivery and launch date, any promotions tied to launch.Pricing request
with a budget range (even if it is a touchy subject). Look at it this way,
if you state your actual budget and a company cant afford to charge so
little, they wont bid and you werent a good match anyway. Companies that
can bid less, still will. Companies that would charge more but want the
business will bid less than usual. Its a win, win no matter the
scenario.Product support and service what are the options for
post-delivery support?Request for questions or improvements. Also, dont
restrict access to decisions makers in the proposal process.Strategic
problem solving. If appropriate, ask how the project would improve
efficiency or profitability for the company. Ask how the vendor would solve
some specific objectives. This area allows a potential vendor to
differentiate themselves from the competition.Thoroughness in all areas now
will save a lot of valuable time in the future. It will ensure that you
wind up with the right partner and a successful project in the end.Peter

Can You Fix Up My Web Site for Higher Ranking?
Posted: 29 May 2011 04:22 PM PDT
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/WebBlogNews/~3/rDKRH9NV9SA/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email
There is not a week that passes by that I do not get an offer, usually
through the back door the contact us form, to move my web site to a higher
position is search engines (ironically, Google seems to have such offers as
well!). It is, of course, a legitimate question whether a non-ranking web
site can be modified so that it moves higher on the holy path of ranking.
Since the page rank algorithm by Google was based on the practices of
academic publishing, i.e. your paper is as good as your colleagues say it
is, via citation, I am going to approach the issue from the point of view
of how to write a publishable paper. I spent 20+ years as Editor-in-Chief
of two scientific journals so I have a ton of data and experience to back
up my statements. When you submit a paper to an Editor, this is what
happens. Because your Editor is overworked (and underpaid or not paid at
all), he will spend a few minutes with your paper before he throws it into
the trash can. There is simply not enough time to read the paper over and
over again to decipher what the author had in mind and provide a detailed
list of how the paper should have been written in the first place. It is
the authors responsibility to let the Editor know with obvious clues that
the paper is worth reading. So what are these clues and where are
they.First, you need an interesting enough title and an abstract that says
it all yet it is as brief as possible. If you pass this test, then the
Editor looks at the Introduction section, especially the part that should
state the novelty of the paper. Then some of the results are checked out
along with the references. The guts of the paper is not looked at until you
pass all the tests above. Once the Editor is happy with your paper, he
sends it out to the reviewers for a thorough evaluation. Now, imagine that
the search engine is an impatient Editor. You submit your site and the
engine needs to make a decision whether to consider it or not. Like the
Editor, it will look for clues based on search criteria: the entered
keywords. Contrary to what some people say, the engine looks at your URL
address along with the title. The URL is an abbreviated title, it should be
meaningful otherwise you could assign numbers to it, e.g. 32563344.com,
like a phone number which is nearly useless except for the area code. If
your sites name is jane-doe.com, then it is clear that the site is (should
be) about Jane Doe.Then the Editor/search engine looks at the top and the
bottom of the page to see if there is something interesting there, i.e. are
there keywords located or what the density of the keywords is. The search
engine also looks at the references section, i.e. your links to other
sites: do you cite quality web sites or just link out to the blue. If all
looks good your site is sent to the reviewers, i.e. the engine indexes the
site and lets the public take a look at it. As the reviews begin to trickle
in along with the citations (external links), your site moves up on the
ranks to the level corresponding to its popularity and value to the
community.OK, so how do I build a successful web site? First, let us take
look at how a paper is written. It is a forward process: you write down
your experience or your ideas, then pick a suitable title, gather some
keywords and find relevant references. Unfortunately, this does not work
with web sites as site design is a backward process.First and foremost, you
select the proper keywords that:(a) are representative of your site, (b)
have low competition and (c) come with a reasonable monthly search
volume. All three conditions must be satisfied or you will have a hard time
with either ranking or getting visitors to your site. Once the right
keywords are found then the fun part begins: sticking these keywords into
all parts of the site where search engines expect these to be found. That
is, imagine that the engine is your 3-year old kid and the keywords are
Easter eggs painted in different colors.Your job has two objectives:(1)
hide the eggs so that they are not in obvious locations, and (2) hide them
so that your kid will find them. That is, you cannot pile up the eggs in
front of your door in as much as you cannot stuff the title full of
keywords either! Now that you selected the right keywords, URL, title,
description, and placed the keywords strategically well, it is time to
provide the content. As you see, this is a backward process: someone hands
you a piece of paper with some words on it and asks you to write a letter
that seamlessly integrates with the given constraints. Or to put it more
bluntly, take a novel and on each page knock out 90% of the words and then
ask Agatha Christie to fill in the blanks and make it a best seller. All
right, so what about my web site? Can it be modified so that I rank higher?
The answer is: maybe. Just like a paper, if it is written fairly well, then
you can revise it to make it publishable. However, if it is written poorly,
it is very difficult to revise it, the best course of action is to
completely re-write it. The same is true with your web site. If it is done
well, you can make it better. However, if it is designed forward, not
backward, then it is not done well structurally and there is not much one
can do. The best is to get a new web site and have it designed both for
humans as well as search engines.Fine, but what about those links that one
can buy and reciprocate? Well, a link represents a vote or a citation based
on quality and relevance. Yes, you can buy links or exchange links,
however, those links do not represent relevance or quality, they represent
the desire to rank higher. As search engines get smarter, they crack down
on artificial rank boosting tricks simply because the users demand relevant
results not fabricated ones.

Advantages of Using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)
Posted: 29 May 2011 03:41 PM PDT
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/WebBlogNews/~3/4PUff7wu3Wc/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email
Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is one of the most widely used style sheet
language because it allows you to handle web pages effortlessly during
development. As the name suggests, CSS allows the developer to link other
documents in the website and he can also have greater control over the
different elements of a web page. CSS, however, is not applicable to web
design. What is does is about the presentation of content on different
pages along with their formatting (layout, colors, and fonts).Generally it
is applied into style web pages written in markup languages such as HTML
and XHTML. Web developers around the world including the South Wales web
developers use CSS unsparingly as it facilitates content accessibility and
offers greater control. Here follows the a few advantages of using CSS that
have made it the choicest style sheet language among the South Wales web
developers.Lesser bandwidth consumption: One of the most important
advantages of the CSS is its lesser consumption of bandwidth compared to
the table layouts and it makes the pages faster to load. From development
perspective, the time taken by a website to load is foremost concern. A
developer can store the style sheet in cache memory after downloading and
the subsequent pages do not require it to be downloaded time and again.CSS
compliments HTML: HTML is the most popular coding languages but it does not
yield good result when used independently for developing website. But if
HTML is combined with CSS, the web pages are technically stronger.Greater
flexibility in positioning element: South Wales web developers prefer CSS
over other style sheets because it offers greater flexibility in terms of
positioning various elements on different pages. It might be the case while
developing a website that the placement of some links or columns is not
appropriate to the structure. If the website is being developed using CSS,
then the task of repositioning gets very easy for the developer as he can
place anything anywhere. Compatibility with different web browsers: Since
Cascading Style Sheet is compatible with the most of the web browsers,
provided the website has been developed by using HTML or XHTML. CSS enabled
sites works similar to all the web browsers.Print friendly web pages:
Another reason behind the widespread use of CSS for HTML based web
applications is that they generate print-friendly web pages. CSS
automatically eliminates the colors and image and thus printing the pages
become very easy.Customization of webpage: CSS is a craze among website
developers due to the customizability it offers. South Wales web developers
are particularly fond of it because the present web development industry is
focused on developing customizable websites. A developer can easily change
the layout of a page without damaging the content presentation because the
CS style sheets are stored externally.Apart from these advantages, CSS
comes with other supports such as compatibility to search engine
visibility, content portability, consistency in the pages. As a formatting
style, CSS has hardly a peer at present and the whole of the website
development industry has accepted CSS as the only dependable style sheet to
use.
