Mumbai Public Relations Development Over The Years

Mumbai now has become a tag of sophistication and class. The name of this
place itself has become a wonder in itself. Not only the place but the
population comprising the city is just wonderful and famous for the harmony
and peace with which they have been living since the ancient times. With
the development of this city many organizations have also come up to
maintain good public relations. Generally we use an abbreviation for the
word public relations- PR. With the ever increasing population of this
metro city, the necessity of good PR just becomes indispensable. Many steps
have been taken by the Government of India as well as the Government of
Mumbai to achieve this task.

Today the city is well known for its public relations that it has with the
government, many organizations, industries, corporations, etc. The success
of any city is marked by its public relations. The better the public, more
is the development of the city. The relations in Mumbai have led to the
integration of the city where the development is increasing day by day. One
of the biggest examples which can be taken is of the entertainment industry
in Mumbai, which has reached heights of popularity not only across our own
nation but the entire world. This industry which is full of glamour and
glitter is also incomplete without public relations. The example mentioned
above is just about the entertainment and cinema industry, but public
relations are an important factor of each and every part of the city. PR is
basically a kind of communication between the public (as the name itself
suggests) and various organizations which can vary from entertainment
organizations to business organizations and so on. Even relations require
the use of well trained speakers and professionals and the city of Mumbai
is obviously not short of any kind of human capital. Even the field of
business is incomplete without relations.

These days, commercials and advertisements are also a way of improving
relations and there use has been effectively noticed in many well managed
organizations. The common people may also contribute in improving public
relations by undertaking demonstrations and using hoardings. The well
developed nations like the US and many more are famous for their good
public relations. Hence we can say that good relations are a symbol of the
development of a nation or a city. The use of well trained professional
public speakers makes the task of advancing public relations. The PR of
Mumbai City or we can say that the public relations of Mumbai have become
quite enhanced till date. We all know how important it is for a nation or a
city to maintain good relations within it that is between the public and
the various other institutes. In case the relations are not good, the city
is in high danger to suffer from social as well as economic backwerdness.
So we conclude that good PR symbolizes overall development.

How to Master Public Speaking

Public speaking is an important topic these days. Especially in business
people have to speak in public more than ever. And the worst thing is that
they are expected to be good at it.
Its strange that public speaking is one of the few subjects where its
actually expected to be good at without ever having practiced it.
What can you do to get better at it? What will help you to master public
speaking?

Body Language
Mastering public speaking also has to do with mastering body language. In a
study it was found that humans pay most attention to nonverbal clues. So
when in doubt people will always believe in your body language rather than
your words.
Mastering body language first of all means to have a good posture. You cant
speak in public looking like an insecure teenager. People simply wont
listen to you or wont even give you a chance. To be perceived as confident
you need to stand straight with your legs shoulder-wide apart. Push your
chest forward and your shoulders back. Thats the normal posture of an alpha
male.
Now the last thing you need to keep in mind is that you need to keep eye
contact with your fellow listeners. Dont be shy and avoid looking at
people. On the other hand dont be demeaning and look too long at someone.
Try to find a balance.

Practice
Practice is the most important aspect of becoming a master of public
speaking. You cant expect to become a good public speaker just by studying
the theory of it. You need to get out there to gather some experience.
Experience is the most important things about everything you do. You wont
be the best cook over night simply because it requires lots of hours of
practice to master an art. The same applies to public speaking.
Whenever you get a chance to speak in public do so. Especially if you dont
feel that you should do it, then go ahead and do it anyway because you will
be grateful afterwards.

Voice
Your voice is another important tool for every public speaker. If you dont
speak clearly then people will stop listening to you after a few minutes.
If you dont speak loud enough then people will have a hard time following
you and they wont listen to you anymore.
Remember that its important to speak loud enough when you hold a speech.
Everyone should be able to hear.
Varying your tone is another important aspect of using your voice. Dont
speak in a monotone way. Try to vary your tone. If you are excited about
something then show it to others, use your voice to express it.

Tips to Over Come Public Speaking Fear

If you are struggling to prepare for an upcoming speech or you just want to
learn how you can become a competent public speaker then keep reading
because I wrote this article to help people just like you.

Everybody would like to be able to stand in front of a crowd of people and
deliver a perfect speech, but most people dont think that doing something
like that would ever be achievable for them. But as long as you are willing
to work hard it is entirely possible for anyone to achieve this goal. I was
a perfect example of somebody who thought they would never become
successful at public speaking but luckily I managed to prove myself wrong.

Effective public speaking is vital in many different careers and can quite
often can mean the difference between getting the promotion that you were
going for, or staying in the same position for years to come! and that was
certainly the case for me. A lot of people will just try to convince
themselves that they are not going to be any good at speaking in public or
that their fears are just too much of a hurdle, but the fact of the matter
is that anybody is capable of overcoming their public speaking fears and
delivering very effective public speeches.

One of the first steps that you will need take when trying to overcome your
Public Speaking Fear is to build up your self-confidence and believe in
yourself, if you come across as confident and charismatic then people will
see that and be much more interested in what you have to say to them. On
the other hand, if you come across as nervous or unsure of yourself then
people will definitely pick up on this and will not take your speech
seriously or in a worse case scenario they may begin to heckle you! which
is definitely not what you want to happen at all. As soon as people see
that you are not in control they will try to make you look like a fool and
once this happens your speech will effectively be over.

So, once you have come to terms with the fact that you need to completely
ooze self-confidence then you will be ready to start the next step in the
process, which in my case was to get some training in the art of public
speaking from professionals who will be able to totally transform you into
a very effective public speaker.

I know that it is not as straight forward as it sounds to be able to become
extremely self-confident while standing in front of a room full of people,
but this really is something that you will have to come to terms with in
order to progress in your public speaking. If you would like to find out
more about how you can master the art of public speaking, just like I did,
then take a look at my public speaking fear blog for all the advice and
help that you will need to succeed.

Public Speaking Training- Six Key Elements to Look for In Any Public
Speaking Training

Most people seem to think that good public speakers are born not made.
Nothing could be further from the truth. Most good public speakers have
undergone significant training in public speaking.

Even politicians those great natural orators have all undergone public
speaking training. In the UK Margaret Thatcher was known to use speech
coaches. In the US President Bush has consulted actors to help improve his
speech delivery.

Whatever your level of public speaking you can improve with a little help
from the professionals.

If you do a quick search on the internet for public speaking training you
will get thousands of hits from sites promoting everything from self study
e-books to 14 day residential courses. It is difficult to decide which is
right for you.

Here are six things that you should look for when selecting the training or
help that is right for you.

1. Principles of public speaking

Everyone has their own ideas of the basic principles of public speaking.
As a minimum look for some mention of defining your goals, researching and
deciding on your content, and understanding your audience and their needs.

2. Body language

Body language is at least as important as the actual words you use in your
presentation. Some experts claim that the way in which your words are
delivered your posture, stance, gestures and animation does more to
convey your meaning than any words that you actually say.

Body language is a huge subject. A course on public speaking must cover
the basic principles.

3. Use of words

Having said that body language is more important than the actual words it
is a fact that without the words there is usually no message. Obviously,
researching and creating the content of your speech are vitally important.
How to create and craft your content are essential in any training.

4. Preparation

If there is one key to success in public speaking it is preparation,
preparation, preparation. How to prepare is pretty simple. Learning how
to do it well and quickly is a key skill. Some topics to look out for
include questions such as:

Should you write and use scripts?

When should you use notes and how should you prepare them?

Can you rely on your memory alone?

Should you use audio visual aids?

5. Delivery

Most public speaking training concentrates on telling you how to deliver.
And this is probably the right emphasis. Just make sure that the
principles of public speaking have been well covered so you know just what
your delivery has to achieve.

Most physical courses well video your performance for you to review and
critique. Its a technique that has stood the test of time. If you put
your faith in an e-course you should also look for mentor on whom you can
practise your public speaking.

6. Conquering nerves

Show me someone who doesnt feel some degree of nervousness before speaking
in public and I will show you someone who doesnt care about their
performance. Nerves are natural and even help to improve our performance.

For many people there is little more stressful in life than the prospect of
public speaking. I have known highly confident, articulate people be
physically sick before speaking in public. Any course on public speaking
is incomplete without some help and guidance on controlling or conquering
nerves.

There are literally thousands of topics that could be covered in a course
on public speaking. Depending on your own particular circumstances and
needs the overall emphasis will change.

Ensure that the training you select covers these 6 fundamental pillars
first. You will be surprised how much sub standard training it will help
you filter out. You can then select the training that most closely m
atches your needs from those that remain.

Public Speaking: The Differences Between a Man and a Woman (in the Audience
that is!)

Public Speaking: The Differences Between a Man and a Woman (in the Audience
that is!)

There is nothing I like better than an all female public speaking audience.
All female audiences tend to laugh more easily and louder than all male
audiences. All-male audiences are the toughest because the male ego gets in
the way of laughter. They look around to see if anyone else is laughing
before they laugh, and they wont laugh as loud because they think they will
look less powerful.

If you speak to an all-male audience it is more critical to bond and be one
of the guys especially if you are a female speaker. Im not being sexist
here. I dont believe in sexist language. Im just giving you the thoughts to
keep in mind if you are a female speaker and you want to be successful
speaking in front of a general all-male audience. You must realize: not all
males out there in the business world are as sensitive as me (send all big
hugs to me in care of my publisher). If your all-male audience consists of
a general public audience not from the same company or field, stick to
sports, business, and money to best connect with them.

One of the hardest audiences to deal with consists of a group of executives
from the same company when the CEO is present. If you say something funny,
the executives will start to laugh, but they choke it off until they check
to see if the CEO is laughing. If he or she is laughing, then they go ahead
and laugh. This kind of audience will create timing nightmares for you. If
you are the CEO and you are in the audience for a presentation, it is your
obligation to laugh and at least act like youre having a good time to give
permission to everyone else to laugh. As a good public speaker, you can
sometimes take it upon yourself to gently explain to the CEO how everyone
will look to him or her for approval.

Audiences that consist of more than 50 percent women are good too because
the presence of the females provides a good buffer and makes it OK for the
men to laugh, since so many other people are laughing.

Learn to make a home run presentation everytime!

Public Speaking How to Close a Speech

One of the worst mistakes you can make as a public speaker is talking too
long. Not only will you send some folks to never, never land, you will make
some of them downright mad. It doesnt matter if your entire speech was
brilliant and the audience came away with information that will change
their lives. If you talk too long, they will leave saying, That speaker
just wouldnt quit. Dont let this happen to you! Say what you have to say
and sit down. Before you do, give them a well thought out closing.

The last thing you say may be the most remembered. You must put as much
time into selecting and practicing your closing as you put into any other
part of your presentation. Just like your opening, your closing does not
have to be humorous. It could be motivational, challenging, thoughtful,
respectful of the length of the presentation, or it could restate your
point in a different way. This ending segment will have a strong influence
on what the audience takes home with them when you are done. Please, at
sometime during your talk ask the audience to do something. Many a great NO
ZZZZZs talk went no further than the walls of the meeting room because the
audience wasnt moved to action. If you havent ask them to do something by
now, the closing is your last chance.

If the subject is appropriate, I happen to be fond of humorous closings for
several reasons. If you leave them laughing and applauding, you will exit,
but an extremely positive impression about you will remain. Another good
reason to leave them laughing is that the room will not be deadly silent as
you are walking back to your seat. I hate when that happens. I do love
laughter and feeling good; finishing a speech humorously gives me and the
audience an opportunity to feel great.Speeches that are for entertainment
purposes only should generally leave the audience laughing.

Finally, if the subject is not appropriate to end with laughter, you could
end with a touching story or quotation that leaves the audience thoughtful
and quiet. Even the most serious public speaking subjects can benefit from
humor, but the humor should be sprinkled throughout the body of the
presentation. Dont put it at the end because closings are powerful and the
audience will think your overall attitude toward the subject is flippant.

This same technique can be very effective in ending a mostly humorous
speaking engagement. Have them laughing all along while you make your
points. Then finish seriously. This contrast will create a great impact. It
will convey the fact that you believe in a lighthearted approach to the
subject, but the results are very serious to you.

Dont be afraid to use humor when you speak in public. Just make sure you
learn to do it right.

How do you become a great speaker and get paid for it? Learn the public
speaking techniques that will create the career of your dreams and change
other peoples lives forever. Its easier than you think!

Public Speaking: Props

Posted: 12 Jul 2011 09:06 AM PDT
http://ping.fm/tyqb0

Public Speaking: Props

In public speaking the term prop is a shortened version of the theatrical
term property, a word used to describe any object handled or used by an
actor in a performance. As a speaker you are a performer whether you
believe it or not. You have an obligation to use whatever means necessary
to get your message across to the audience.

I think of props as any physical item that is on stage with you. Your
flipchart is a prop. Your lectern is a prop. Overhead projectors, pointers,
notes, chairs, markers, pens, and other audio/visual aids are all forms of
props. Conversely, props are a form of visual aid.

Why use props?

Props help warm up the audience when you do a public speaking engagement.
They can be used as a substitute for notes. They help focus attention on
the speaking points you are trying to make along with illustrating them for
you. They make better connections than your words with the visually
oriented members of your audience. They create interest, add variety, and
make your points more memorable.

Props can be used pre-program to pass around in the audience in
anticipation of the program. You see this at large arenas when beach balls
and Frisbees are being tossed around in the crowd. I pass out snacks and/or
custom-designed crossword puzzles about the group that I make on my
computer. The puzzles make especially great icebreakers because the members
of the group get together to help each other with the solutions.

Do you hate relying on notes? Props can be a substitute for written cheat
sheets. To illustrate this in live seminars and television interviews I use
three hats as an outline for a program. The first hat is a gag ball cap
that has really long hair attached to it so that you look like a hippie
when you wear it. The second hat is a black top hat. The third is a safari
hat. Each hat prompts me to talk about a thoroughly rehearsed bit or chunk.
Putting on the longhaired ball cap immediately reminds me to talk about
when the company was young and aggressive. After that section I remove the
ball cap (if you have a fun and playful audience, you could put it on an
audience members head), then I put on the black top hat. The top hat
prompts a section on the mature growth years of the company. I then put on
the safari hat which kicks off a section on searching for new business. The
whole talk is done without any notes at all. You only have to memorize your
opening and closing and practice each of the sections independently as you
learned in a previous issue.

Didnt someone say a prop is worth a thousand words? Maybe that was a
picture, but its just about the same thing. Many times a well selected prop
will illustrate your point much better than you could ever do in words. It
also focuses attention directly on the point you are trying to make because
it is something novel that is occurring during the presentation. People can
space out easily on your words, but a unique prop is hard to ignore. Also,
the visually oriented people in your audience will perk up and get more
value when you use props.

Memorability is another good reason to use props. People remember pictures
far longer than words. That is why the treat public speakers that use
stories try to use words to create images in your mind. They know the
images will be remembered when the words are long forgotten. If you are not
a great storyteller yet, you can use props to help create these pictures.

Types of props

There are many different kinds of props that can be used to your advantage
in a public speech. Extra large or extra small props are funny. Noisemakers
are funny. Even though you are attacking the sense of hearing, you are
attacking it in a unique way that makes it memorable. Costumes and magic
tricks make good props.

I have a friend who speaks on telephone skills. He uses a giant telephone
receiver to make a point about the importance of phone skills. I used a
clown prop to make the serious point that if we went through with this
merger it would be like being in a thunderstorm with a clown umbrella (for
those of you that do not know, a clown umbrella is only about 8 inches in
diameter).

Noisemakers are fun. I recommended that a sales manager get one of those
expressway revenge devices that makes machine gun, ray gun, and bomb noises
when you press a button. If XYA company gets in our way, this is what will
do to them (he pressed the machine gun button while holding the device near
the microphone). He got his point across.

I have worn gorilla costumes, brought full-size mannequins on stage and
kicked them around. I have done simple magic tricks and many other things
to get my point across in a more memorable and interesting fashion.

You dont necessarily have to do wild things to use props. A very creative
friend of mine, Carolyn Long, was going to speak about the keys to
creativity. She opened by holding up keys, then discarded them in favor of
a combination lock. Her point was made.

Tips for using props

* Normally you should keep your special props hidden until you are ready to
use them.

* Make sure the prop can be seen from all parts of the room.

* ALWAYS speak to the audience, not the prop (unless the prop is a puppet).

* Make sure the audience is focused on surprise props before you unleash
the surprise. (If using a fake peanut can with pop out snakes, hold the can
in full view for an extra second before you open it so the audience does
not miss it).

How To Develop Confidence For Public Speaking

How To Develop Confidence For Public Speaking

Public speaking is the act of speaking on a particular subject in front of
a group of people with the intention of influencing, entertaining or
informing the listeners. In order to be a good speaker one must be able to
influence people, change their opinion, and get the point across. But the
important question is, how does one develop confidence for public speaking?
Of the many public speaking skills o master, this is perhaps the most
important & challenging.

Here are some excellent tips for you to successfully become a good public
speaker:

• The first and the foremost secret is to be always well prepared for the
speech. Be hundred percent sure of your content and know exactly what you
are going to say to your audience. And always know a little more than what
is on your speech. This way, you gain confidence as you go along because
you know what you are talking about.

• Time your speech well. You will be extra confident if you plan exactly
when you will start and finish.

• Even if you are a skilled speaker, you are bound to feel nervous
sometimes. Don’t worry, stay calm and turn your nervousness into raw energy
that you can use while delivering your speech.

• Relax a bit before the speech. Take a few deep breaths through your nose
and let the tension melt away.

• Know your audience well and interact with them before starting on your
speech. This way you feel better while speaking. And as you spot familiar
faces in the audience looking up to you, your confidence increases tenfold.

• Remember, stage fright is nothing but a manifestation of our lack of
belief in our own self. So tell yourself that you are going to speak really
well and you will.

• Focus more on the speech than the audience.

• Also, know the area where you are going to deliver the speech. The more
comfortable you are in your surroundings, the more flow your speech is
going to have. You will sound a lot more confident and at ease.Always be
energetic and alert while giving a speech as it livens up the atmosphere.
Spectators look up to you as someone who is very sure of what he is
speaking.

• Your body language defines your personality. So don’t slouch, smile
excessively or fiddle with your hair or hands. Be confident and maintain a
right posture with your head upwards.

• Remember no one really knows how tensed you might be. So even if you make
a mistake or an error, move on and don’t let it break your flow. This will
maintain your confidence. Smile and stay focused.

Follow these tips and you will be giving great speeches in no time!

The 5 Biggest Mistakes Made in Public Speaking

I recently had the opportunity to hear a world-renowned public speaker and
was surprised as well as disappointed by his delivery. While his message
was excellent, his means of delivering that message would have gotten him a
C- in my college public speaking class. Without a doubt, content is
important in any form of public speaking; however, if your entire script is
written out word-for-word in your PowerPoint presentation, why bother? It
would be a better use of the audiences time if you would Xerox it, pass it
out, and then everyone can go home!

1. Memorizing or reading your entire presentation is a grave mistake. Your
audience came to hear you speak to them – not read or deliver a rote,
memorized performance. Your responsibility is to communicate with your
audience, not at them. By treating your audience as if you were having a
conversation in your living room, you will find that you are much more
comfortable and in better control of your nervousness.

2. Not knowing your material is another serious blunder. If you are not
familiar with your words or how your speech or presentation flows, then you
are likely to make more errors. Making a mistake or two is not the issue –
making a lot of them is!

3. Speaking too fast. Controlling your speed is extremely important if you
expect your audience to be able understand what you are saying. Listening
to someone move at 100 mph takes much more energy than speaking at 75!
Incidentally, talking at a furious pace saps the energy of you, the
speaker, as well.

4. Staring at an object on the wall. By no means should you focus your
attention on a spot on the wall or above the heads of your audience. Look
them in the eye. Make the contact with your listeners and you will then be
aware of their reaction to you. Remember, public speaking is a form of
communication. If you are not making eye contact, then you are not
communicating.

5. Running Out of Air. Breathlessness on the podium is one of the most
common mistakes made because many novice – and even some professional –
speakers do not think to breathe. If you wait until you are totally out of
air, you will then be required to inhale a huge amount in order to fill
your lungs. In doing so, you will experience breathlessness and a tightness
in your chest. My advice is to learn to breathe with the support of your
diaphragm – truly the best means of controlling nervousness – and then
practice supplementing your air supply before you are depleted.

These 5 common mistakes can be easily rectified if you know your material,
converse with your audience, learn how to control your speed, make eye
contact with your listeners and remember to breathe.
