Istanbul (Constantinople) Ottoman Empire to the Republic of Turkey
Istanbul Past and Present Istanbul (Turkish: İstanbul, Greek:
Κωνσταντινούπολη, historically Byzantium and later Constantinople; see
other names) is Turkeys most populous city, and its cultural and financial
center. The city covers 25 districts of the Istanbul province. It is
located on the Bosphorus strait, and encompasses the natural harbor known
as the Golden Horn, in the northwest of the country. It extends both on the
European (Thrace) and on the Asian (Anatolia) side of the Bosphorus, and is
thereby the only metropolis in the world which is situated on two
continents On May 29, 1453, Sultan Mehmed II the Conqueror entered
Constantinople after a 53day siege and the city was promptly made the new
capital of the Ottoman Empire. In the last decades of the Byzantine Empire,
the city had decayed as the Byzantine state became increasingly isolated
and financially bankrupt, its population had dwindled to some thirty or
forty thousand people whilst large sections remained uninhabited.[10] Thus,
Sultan Mehmeds first duty was to rejuvenate the city economically, creating
the Grand Bazaar and inviting the fleeing Orthodox and Catholic inhabitants
to return back. Suleiman the Magnificents reign was a period of great
artistic and architectural achievements. The famous architect Sinan
designed many mosques and other grand buildings in the city, while Ottoman
arts of ceramics and calligraphy also flourished. Many tekkes survive to
this day; some in the form of mosques

We visited the Istanbul 1453 Panorama Museum, which houses the panorama
painting of the conquest of Constantinople. Simply amazing. To get there,
take the tram towards Bagcilar, and get down at the Topkapi station, just
outside the city walls.

Relations with Kiev Rus Between 800 and 1100 the Empire developed a mixed
relationship with the new state of Kiev Rus that emerged to the north
across the Black Sea. Byzantine Empire quickly became a main trading and
cultural partner for Kiev. After christianizing Rus Vladimir the Great
employed many architects and artists to work on numerous cathedrals and
churches around Rus, expanding the Byzantine influence even further. Kiev
Princes were often married into the Byzantine imperial family and
Constantinople often employed Princes armies, most notably Vladimir the
Great presented Byzantine with the famous Varangian Guard an army of
vicious Scandinavian mercenaries. Some believe that it was done in exchange
for the marriage to Basils sister Anna to Vladimir.[1] However, as Primary
Chronicle states the marriage was in exchange for the Rus conversion to
Orthodoxy, the Varangian Guard (although a signifficant one) was a
by-product of this exchange. These relationships were not always friendly.
During those three hundred years Constantinople and other Byzantine cities
were attacked several times by the armies of Kiev Rus (see Rus-Byzantine
Wars). Kiev never went far enough to actually endanger the Empire, those
wars were only a tool to force the Byzantine to sign increasingly favorable
trade treaties, the texts of which are recorded in the Primary Chronicle
(Rus-Byzantine Treaty (907))[4] and other historical documents.

Palace, was built by the Byzantines in the 12th century and used as an
imperial residence until the Conquest of Constantinople in the 15th
century. The palace complex was built next to the city walls at the ancient
Blakherna district, in todays Egrikapi. 17th century, a zoo was established
here. 18th century, the palace was used as a ceramic workshop. 19th century
glass production atelier. The world famous Kasikci Diamond, was found in
the garbage of the premise. BKBAZHE is a writer, poet, and artist. He is
the author of DAMAGES (creative nonfiction) —Winner in the Writers Digest
